I ate some jelly beans today. They were mighty tasty. Whatever happened to that monkey I used to know? Why do I live in this big house? I sure do love me some jellybeans.

Someone is breaking into my secret drawer and writing in my diary. But it seems he likes jellybeans too! And maybe he knows something about that monkey’s whereabouts? I wonder how I can find out how he’s getting into my drawer. Maybe he has some jellybeans.

February 23, 1986…or is it 1952?

I thought I found that monkey today, wearing a red dress. But it was just that lady who keeps following me around asking if I’m feeling alright. She kinda looks like that cartoon I was watching earlier, that mean skeleton-lookin’ fella. I wonder if she has any jellybeans.

March…oh hell I don’t remember

There’s a boring fella I’ve been meaning to ask the name of. Sits around in that office all day, can’t figure out the meaning of it. He never has any damn jellybeans either. Talking with that woman all the time. Gotta find some way to keep the jellybeans from sticking in my dentures.

Later that day

I never remember California having so many damn cherry trees. And those fellas in the black suits only have those nasty licorice-flavored jelly beans. I don’t like those kind.

This awesome short interview with Mark Mothersbaugh is an interesting and funny look at one of contemporary art's most introspective Rad People. Coming out of Kent State in the early 70s, the art, music, and philosophy of De-evolution is still relevant today.

"Make Mine Freedom" (1948) is a cleverly worded cartoon propaganda against communism. The student animation is top-notch, and the Dali-esque Bad Guy is priceless. The poison comes in the form of ISM (read: communISM), with the capitalist ideal touted and carefully avoided being called an -ism. Now substitute The Patriot Act or Military Commissions Act for ISM and now how does that make you feel?

The awesomest thing about this video (26 min.) from 1993 about techno music in Berlin is that everyone here still dresses that way. Tresor just celebrated it's 15th year last weekend, and incubated one of the best house music creators ever, John Acquaviva, who played in Tresor from the very beginning. The video dialog is in German, but it's worth watching for the music and the clothes.

Back in the early '90s, when new wave was big in the underground scene, either by those who still loved it from the first time 'round, or by people like me who had older siblings who bought Smiths records, I fell in love with the band Berlin. Listening to my favorite radio show Sunday evenings, I fantasized about Euro-trash new wave bands who wrote edgy songs like Sex (I'm A...) (4.6 Mb, 5:08 min) with that special non-native speaker twist. How disappointed I was to find out Berlin was really from California.

Spree Park is an abandoned tivoli in south-eastern Berlin. Shut down in 2002 but easily accessible by the public, it is a popular spot to creep yourself out at night. One more here.

The galleries at the Character walk were a bit dissappointing, but we happened upon two unrelated installations that turned out (especially in comparison) to be quit interesting. The first was Nurse Clara, an installation piece involving a lot of backscratching. The second was a series of 3x5 photographs by Claudia Rannow, arranged so the viewer could change the order of the prints and thereby the story. An absorbing online version exists here.

Momus, a Scottish musical anomaly sometimes and current resident of Berlin, recording this Podcast in 2005 (Quicktime, 44 min.), documenting two days wandering about the city marvelling in Momus' special way about Berlin. He's also recorded a trilogy of albums about Berlin, the last of which was released this past summer, entiltled Ocky Milk, of which a video for the song "Frilly Military" can be seen here (Quicktime, 17.5 Mb).
